cures No Comments »

BV is a common vaginal infection that affects women in their reproductive years. In this week’s video, we will be talking about vaginitis and how it affects the pelvic floor muscles.

✅ BV can cause pelvic floor dysfunction, especially if it’s recurring
✅ BV is characterized by a shift in vaginal flora that alters the ability of the PF muscles to function optimally
✅ Patients experiencing recurrent BV should be assessed by a PF therapist to get a full picture of their PF muscles
✅ About 60-70% of women diagnosed with BV will have a recurrence within 3 months

How can you best help patients who have received treatment, but continue experiencing symptoms, or those who have a recurrence? Watch this week’s video to find out!

In this video Dr O’Donovan explains how to treat and prevent BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS (BV).

BV happens because of a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria and a drop in the lactobacillus bacteria inside the vagina which is responsible for keeping the vagina slightly acidic so bad bacteria don’t grow as well.

Now the good news is that BV usually doesn’t cause any other health problems. But it can lead to issues, especially when you’re pregnant or trying to get pregnant so in this video we’ll cover treatment and prevention.

SYMPTOMS OF BV:

• A burning feeling when you pee
• A fishy smell that gets stronger after sex
• Itching
• Thin white, gray, or green discharge.

TREATMENT OPTIONS:

Antibiotics like (metronidazole or clindamycin) are normally given to treat BV. This could be a tablet you take by mouth or a cream or gel you put into your vagina.

You’ll need to take most treatments for 5 to 7 days and you should finish all your medicine, even if the symptoms go away. This is because if you stop early, the infection could come back.

It’s common for bacterial vaginosis to come back, usually within a few months and if it does come back, you’ll usually be given more antibiotics to treat it.

If you get it more than 4 times a year then you may be given an antibiotic gel that you put in your vagina. You may need to use this for a few months to help stop bacterial vaginosis coming back.

PREVENTATIVE TIPS:

• Clean sex toys after every use.
• Don’t douche – Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria and so can scented soaps, bubble baths, and vaginal deodorants.
• Get tested for sexually transmitted diseases, and make sure your sex partners are tested.
• Try to use protection with every sexual partner – for example if your partner is male ask them to use a condom.
• Use only water or mild soap to wash your genitals.
• Finally, wipe from front to back after you use the bathroom.

1:13 Causes of Fungal nail infection
2:37 Symptoms of Fungal nail infection
3:03 Diagnosis of Fungal nail infection
3:36 Treatment of Fungal nail infection

Fungal nail infection is an infection caused by fungal invasion of the nail structure.
• Fungal nail infections are the most common disease of the nail, making up about 50% of nail abnormalities
• Damage to the nail structure can affect the growth, shape, size of the nail
• Fungal nail infections can affect both the fingernails and the toenails, but the toenails are more susceptible to an infection because the toe has less blood flow than the fingers, making it harder for the body to pick up on and prevent infection. The toenails are also more commonly affected because fungus thrives in dark, warm places.
• Fungal nail infections can develop in people of any age but it is more prevalent in older adults. As the nails age, it can become brittle, dry, and crack, allowing fungi to enter.
• In severe cases, fungal nail infection can cause permanent damage to the nails and may lead to other serious infections that spread beyond the feet, this is usually common in people with a suppressed immune system due to medication, diabetes or other conditions
CAUSES
Fungal nail infections are caused by various fungi.
The most common cases are caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes (making up around 85-90% of all cases), such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton violaceum and Trichophyton rubrum (the most common dermatophytes that cause fungal nail infection). Dermatophytes are highly resistant and can survive for long periods in dark and warm environments.
Some yeasts and molds also cause these infections; they include:
Molds – Aspergillus, neoscytalidium, Scopulariopsis, and Acremonium species.
Yeasts – candida species which is responsible for 5-10% of fungal nail infection. This affects fingernails more than toenails.

The portrayal of HIV and AIDS in the media refers to events and trends in the discussion of HIV and AIDS in mass media. HIV leads to a large amount of illness and many deaths. It is unique from most other diseases because there is stigma and discrimination surrounding those affected with the disease. The transmission of HIV, however, is extremely preventable and the media is a very effective way to convey this information. The UNESCO report on Journalism Education says, “Well researched television content can create public awareness about HIV prevention, treatment, care and support can potentially influence the development and implementation of relevant policies.”

The condition which was later to be called AIDS was first noticed as something strange and different in June 1981 when the Centers for Disease Control reported that five gay men in Los Angeles all died from a similar rare set of disease symptoms. Within two months 100 more gay men had died, and there was public awareness from medical publication that some new disease existed. Most media outlets have shown the tendency to universalize by emphasizing the risk to an entire age group, sex or sexual orientation as opposed to the behaviors and characteristics of individuals which pose the greater risk. How and when various media outlets throughout the world published this information varies, as has subsequent and contemporary reporting and depiction of HIV and AIDS in the media.
